Conjugation of Verbs • The endings (-ía, - ías, - ía, - íamos, - íais, - ían) are the same for –AR, -ER, and –IR verbs • The endings are attached directly to the verb HABLAR + (yo) -ĺA → HABLARĺA COMER + (tú) -ĺAS → COMERĺAS VIVIR + (nosotros) -ĺAMOS → VIVIRĺAMOS

Uses of the Conditional • To indicate something hypothetical or unreal in present or future time • To indicate future time within the past • To indicate probability in past time • To soften a statement or request • To express possible or likely situations when a condition is met
Examples of Uses • To indicate future time within the past • Dije ayer que lo haríamos hoy = Yesterday, I said we would (were going to) do it today. • To indicate probability in past time • ¿Dónde estáría María anoche? = Where do you think Maria was last night? • Estáría en casa = She was probably at home • To soften a statement or request • Quiero cinco dólares = I want $5.00 → Querría cinco dólares = I would like $5.00
Possible or Likely Situations • Si Present, Present • used for things that happen regularly when a condition is met • Si llueve, no trabajamos = If it rains, we don’t work • Miro la televisión si no quiero leer = I watch TV if I don’t want to read • Si Present, Future • Used for events that will occur (in the future) if the condition is met (in the present) • Si tengo tiempo, yo lo haré = If I have time, I will do it. • Serás inteligente si estudias = You will be smart if you study • Si Present, Imperative • Used to give an order (in the imperative) dependent on the condition being met • Llama mañana si puedes = Call tomorrow if you can • Si usted tiene dinero, pague la cuenta = If you have money, pay the bill
Conditional Perfect • Indicates something hypothetical or unreal in present or future time • The conditional perfect is formed by using the conditional forms of the helping verb haber with the past (or passive) participle Yo habría hablado/comido/vivido = I would have spoken/eaten/lived.
