  1. Securing the Future of Canada’s AHSCs… Pre-Symposium Feedback & Implications for Discussion Mr. Glenn Brimacombe, Co-Chair, AHSC Steering Committee 1

  2. Overview of Consultation Process • Pre-Symposium Focus Groups - Analyzed for specific suggestions to include in the draft • Pre-Symposium Web Questionnaire - substantive comments analyzed for themes to further stimulate symposium discussion • Symposium - Integrated discussion • Post Symposium Web Questionnaire - Quantitative & qualitative to finalize draft

  3. Objectives • Present some of the ideas that came out of the focus groups and pre-symposium questionnaire • The respondents are leaders of large organizations, associations & faculty who’ve provided structured and substantive feedback • The feedback is summarized at a high level by theme and in the form of questions (to avoid too much bias pre-discussion). • For those who have not completed a questionnaire – consultation continues for two weeks post-symposium.

  4. Themes/Implications/Discussion Questions • How do we maximize the potential of AHSCs/Ns into improved patient care and population health? • What is the overlap between the mandate and vision of an AHSC/N with current regional health planning authorities? • Is the AHSC equipped to function as a competitive research enterprise? • What is the role of an AHSC in advancing new technologies and new modalities of patient care?

  5. Themes/Implications/Discussion Questions • Can an AHSC/N exist without a medical school? What does an AHSC/N include? What should it include? • How similar or different should AHSCs/Ns across the country be? What, if any, are the reasons for differences? • Is an AHSC/N ‘an organization’ i.e. with characteristics of an organization or is it less formalized? • Do the individual organizations within AHSCs/Ns have identities outside of their role within the AHSC/N?

  6. Themes/Implications/Discussion Questions • Is the AHSC/N identity recognizable/recognized in/by its local community (professional and public)? • What are the funding models for patient care, research and clinical education within an AHSC/N? • Do hospitals or institutions in AHSC/Ns need to be designated? • What are the performance measures for AHSCs? Are they the same for AHSNs?

  7. Themes/Implications/Discussion Questions • Are AHSCs/Ns national resources? If so, what are the implications? • What is the role of federal government? How do we promote or facilitate inter-government communications. • How do we build on current & past experience? • What difference will AHSCs/Ns make in the future?
