  1. REPROOF 2 Samuel 12:1-14

  2. A Touching Story • Nathan uses a story to get David objectively committed to the principle he violated v.1-4 • Then David responds correctly to the principle v.5 • Only after this does Nathan make the application to David: “You are the man!” v.7 • People are emotionally attached to their beliefs • We must tear down spiritual walls used as defense against submission to God’s will 2 Cor. 10:3-4

  3. Important Components of Reproof • Nathan begins by reminding David of all the blessings the Lord gave him v.7-8 • People sin because of a lack of will much more than a lack of knowledge • People forget the blessing they received from God Ephesians 1:3 • Therefore, people often lose hope in God’s promises if we are faithful Hebrews 11:6

  4. Important Components of Reproof • Then Nathan enumerates the charges against David v.9-10 • Nathan was specific • Nathan was thorough • David despised the word of God • He did evil in the Lord’s eyes • He killed Uriah with the Ammonites’ sword • He took Uriah’s wife Matthew 1:6 • He dishonored God’s name in the nations

  5. Important Components of Reproof • Nathan then states what the consequences of David’s sins would be v.11-12, Hosea 8:7 • Sex and violence result in sex and violence • Amnon rapes Tamar • Absolom avenges her humiliation by killing Amnon • He uses leverage to rebel against David’s leadership • The rebellion included publicly taking David’s concubines and showing who is “in charge” (advice from Bathsheba’s grandfather) • Then Absolom is killed by someone who could “get by with it” in spite of David’s orders to spare Absolom • Solomon later had to kill Adonijah to establish his rule on the throne of David

  6. Important Components of Reproof • David confessed (and repentedPsalm 51) v.13 • The Lord forgave David v.13 • David was restored and could teach others of God’s salvation Psalm 32 • God’s plan is for the saved to teach those needing to be saved Acts 2:36-41
