Forms of Prayer Adoration and blessing Petition Intercession Thanksgiving Praise
Adoration and Blessing • Blessing is a two step movement. First God gives us a gift, and we respond with joy and gratitude. • It is because God first blesses us that we can in return bless God the source of every blessing. • In Adoration you are acknowledging that you are a creature before the One who created you. Adoration is reserved for God along. • Adoration can take the form of joyful noise or humbles silence.
Intercession • It is a prayer of petition in which you ask for God’s help for another person. • Catholics pray for others following the example of Jesus, who intercedes for all. • This form of prayer helps us see ourselves as part of something much greater. • These prayers often reach out to Church and world leaders, to the lonely, sick, or the forgotten.
Petition • A prayer of Petition is asking God for something you need. • This is the most usual form of prayer because it is spontaneous. It arises from the depths of our hearts. • The Catholic Church teaches the first movement of petition is always asking for forgiveness: acknowledging our shortcomings and turning back to God.
Thanksgiving • In this form we remember we are creatures and God is our Creator. • The more we pray in thanksgiving, the more we are aware that we are a gift of God’s abundant love.
Praise • The Church teaches that praise embraces all forms of prayer and carries them to God. • Praise is the form of prayer that expresses our love for God simply because God IS.
