The Presentation • These are guidelines for your presentation, if you choose to use slides • They will help you make your presentation clear & will be helpful to your audience • If you choose not to use slides, that too, is fine WISE Guidelines for Instructors
A presentation, believe it or not, is the opening move of a conversation – not the entire conversation. – Rebecca Shulman “PowerPointless" http://www.slate.com/articles/life/education/2014/03/powerpoint_in_higher_education_is_ruining_teaching.html WISE Guidelines for Instructors
Table Of Contents • Introduction • Lighting • Font • Title & Text • Color • Graphics, Photographs, Animations & Music • References WISE Guidelines for Instructors
Introduction - I • When preparing the slides for your presentation, you should keep the following facts about the audience in mind: • WISE members are older learners • Some are hearing impaired • Others are visually handicapped • It is important that all can hear & see clearly WISE Guidelines for Instructors
Introduction - II • It is helpful for first time Instructors to attend the Meet and Greet session, where pedagogy for older learners is discussed • You should arrive at the lecture hall 15 minutes ahead of your scheduled starting time • Familiarize yourself with the audio-visual equipment(you can visit the classroom prior to the first meeting of your class) • Wear a headset microphone that is provided to you WISE Guidelines for Instructors
Introduction - III • The Class Assistant will make announcements at the beginning of each class • At the start of your lecture, introduce yourself & the topic of your presentation • While it is important to encourage discussion, it is critical to note that you are in-charge. Your audience should be reminded that: • No one person should dominate the discussion • Private conversations among individuals during the presentation are disruptive to others & are discouraged WISE Guidelines for Instructors
Introduction - IV • Start on time • Hearing & visually impaired audience members should be allowed to sit in the first two rows of the Lecture Hall • When someone asks a questionrepeat it, so that everyone knows what is being asked • In your planning and presentation leave time for questions and discussion because WISE members are active learners WISE Guidelines for Instructors
Lighting • The lights should be kept on in the room during the presentation to prevent some members of the audience from dozing off • However, the lights must be dimmed at the start of your presentation • Keeping the lights on at their maximum intensity affects the colors of the slides & may make them difficult to read WISE Guidelines for Instructors
Font • Font or Typeface should be kept simple • The font should be one that avoids using patterns which may interfere with visualizing the slides • The best fonts are: • Century Gothic(used here) • Calibri • Arial WISE Guidelines for Instructors
Title & Text - I • The presentation used for preparing a document is very different from one that is used for a slide presentation at a lecture, in that: • It has many more lines in the text • Can use multiple colors • May utilize complex charts and graphics WISE Guidelines for Instructors
Title & Text - II • For the title, use size 44 &highlight it using the bold feature • For the main text use a size 32 or 36 • This allows you to create 6 to 8 lines in the main text • This is the optimal number of lines which should be used during a presentation WISE Guidelines for Instructors
Title & Text - III • The slides are meant to assist you with your presentation & not replace it • You should refer to your slides & not spend your entire time reading them • Face the audience as much as possible WISE Guidelines for Instructors
Title & Text - IV • Having too many lines in the text is very confusing for the audience • People are trying to read the slides & are detracted from listening to you • In the title, it is useful to use multiple slides using I, II, III etc. (as in these slides), or use ‘contd’ to ensure continuity WISE Guidelines for Instructors
Color - I • Color in the slides depends upon: • Your computer on which the slides were made • The hardware & software of the computer used for the presentation • The software used by the projector • It is, therefore, important that you keep the choice of colors in the background text as simple as possible WISE Guidelines for Instructors
Color - II • There are complex interactions between • The position of the colors on the visual spectrum • The distance between • The projector & the screen • The screen & the viewer • Therefore, there are limits to the colors that can be used in projected slides • Avoid using white letters on a black background WISE Guidelines for Instructors
Color - III • Use a a White background, with Black or Dark Blue text • Solid color backgrounds can be difficult to read and are expensive to print on an inkjet printer. • Avoid shaded & decorative backgrounds • Do not use italics; use boldletters or Red text to highlight something you want to emphasize WISE Guidelines for Instructors
Colors – White Background The Quick Brown Fox Jumped Over THE LAZYDOG WISE Guidelines for Instructors
Graphics, Photographs, Animations & Music • When using graphics to support making a point in your lecture, make sure they are simple & easy to understand • Photographs, animations & music, when used appropriately, may enhance the quality of your presentation WISE Guidelines for Instructors
Guidelines for Presentation in Smaller Venues - I • The guidelines for Instructors conducting Courses in smaller venues, such as the Plourde Meeting Room and others, remain the same as in the Kennedy Lecture Hall, if you are using slides • Hand outs should be distributed prior to or after the class to avoid disruption during the class WISE Guidelines for Instructors
Guidelines for Presentation in Smaller Venues - II • Prior to starting the class make sure that you can hear each other • You should ask the attendees to introduce themselves to each other • Use a headset microphone if needed WISE Guidelines for Instructors
