life • Life in Stamps wasn’t easy • Lived in the poorest part of town • Was refused treatment by a white dentist • Sometimes wished she was white • Grandmother had her go live with her mom • She moved to San Francisco
life • She was raped by mother’s boyfriend • She told her brother Bailey • Maya’s uncle killed her attacker • Maya felt guilty like she killed him • Maya went mute for nearly five years

life • She moved back to Stamps, Arkansas • Mrs. Flowers helped Maya gain confidence • Maya moved back to San Francisco • Didn’t want to live with her mother • Moved in with her father • Ended up in a shelter for 1 month
