Wooden floors, if properly cared for, will last a lifetime.

A wooden floor, if cleaned and maintained properly, will last a lifetime while lending a look of luxury and elegance all throughout its life. However, it's important that proper care is taken in order for the floor to be maintained in top condition. Special care is required when cleaning the floor so as not to damage the wood. Following are some tips on maintaining the beauty, elegance and longevity of a wooden floor so that it could be enjoyed by generations to come.
Tips • Regularly sweep and dust the floor, especially after any event that may have seen more activity ex. a party. • Vacuum the floor at least once every two weeks. Do not use a vacuum with a beater bar attachment, as it can scratch the smooth finish of wood. • Immediately remove any gravel and/or soil which may have been brought in by shoes etc.as they will leave scratches. Don’t drag them across the floor during removal. • Use dusting and cleaning products especially designed for wood as some products ex. ammonia could damage the shine and ‘look’ of the floor. Always read the instructions on cleaning products carefully. In humid weather, switch on a ceiling fan or air-conditioner to speed up the drying.
Tips • Never pour water on the floor to mop it as water will permanently damage and stain it. Use a damp cloth or mop instead. Clean spills immediately. • Don’t drag furniture or heavy items across the floor. Lift them or use felt contacts under the legs to minimise friction and thus scratches. • Use curtains on windows to block direct sunlight as harsh sunlight could damage wooden floors, leaving them dull and discoloured. • Be careful when walking around in high-heeled shoes, especially stilettoes as they could damage wooden floors. Remove them outside if possible. A shoe-rack at the door may be useful. • Use rugs and mats in high traffic areas or where there may be frequent spills, ex. children’s play areas and areas frequented by pets. Don’t use rubber or vinyl mats as they trap water under them, use cotton rugs instead.
