Convention on the Law of the Sea of 1982 (or Law of the Sea Convention, LOSC)
Name : Convention on the Law of the Sea of 1982 • Draft Year : 1858 • Amendment years : 1960, 1973 • International
Function • The Convention on the Law of the Sea of 1982 functions to govern the seas. It is a treaty that protects nations’ rights, pollution of the sea, protecting marine life, and deals with pirates. • Part of the Convention on the Law of the Sea deals with protecting and preserving marine life, but most of the treaty deals with law concerning the sea. • The Convention also address concerns with dumping sewage into the sea and the fishing rights that fishermen have.
Regulation Enforcement • Enforcement for this treaty is complicated because many countries have rights over many parts of the sea. • If a boat is flying a nation’s flag then they are required to enforce the regulations, and if the boat is sailing in another nation’s territory that nation is required to ask permission to enforce the regulations. • Port nations and coastal nations are also allowed the right to enforce regulations.
