  1. Depression Treatment Therapy, medication, self-help? If you're confused by all the different treatment options for depression, here's how to choose the best approach for you. Find the best depression treatment for you When you're depressed, it feels like you'll never come out of a dark shadow. But even the worst depression can be treated. So if depression is preventing you from living the life you want, don't hesitate to seek help. From therapy to medication to healthy lifestyle changes, there are many different treatment options. Of course, just as no two people get depression in the same way, there is no one-size- fits-all treatment for depression. What works for one person may not work for another. However, by educating yourself as best you can, you can find treatments that can help you overcome depression, feel happy and hopeful again, and get your life back on track. Tips for treating depression Learn as much as you can about your depression. It is important to determine if your depressive symptoms are due to an underlying medical condition. If this is the case, then this condition must be treated first. The severity of your depression also plays a role. The more severe the depression, the more intensive the treatment. It takes time to find the right treatment. It may take some trial and error to find the treatment and support that works best for you. For example, if you decide to seek therapy, it may take several tries before you find a therapist you are truly comfortable with. Or you try antidepressants only to find out that you don't need them if you walk for half an hour every day. Open to change and experimentation. Don't rely on drugs alone. Although these drugs can relieve symptoms of depression, they are usually not suitable for long-term use. Other treatments, including exercise and therapy, can be just as effective as medication, often more effective, but without the unwanted side effects. If you decide to try medication, remember that medication works best when you make healthy lifestyle changes. Get social support. The more you maintain your social contacts, the better protected you will be from depression. If you're feeling stuck, don't hesitate to talk to a trusted

  2. family member or friend, or find new connections in a depression support group, for example. Asking for help is not a sign of weakness and it doesn't mean you are a burden to others. Often, just talking to someone face-to-face can be very helpful. Treatment takes time and commitment. All of these depression treatments take time and can sometimes seem overwhelming or very slow. That's normal. Recovery usually has its ups and downs. Medicine for depression Medication for depression may be the most advertised depression treatment, but that doesn't mean it's the most effective. Depression is not just a chemical imbalance in the brain. Medications can help relieve some of the symptoms of moderate and severe depression, but they do not address the underlying problem and are usually not a long- term solution. Antidepressants also have side effects and safety concerns, and getting rid of them can be very difficult. When considering whether an antidepressant is right for you, learning all the facts can help you make the right decision. Even if you decide to take medication for depression, don't neglect other treatments. Lifestyle changes and therapy not only help speed recovery from depression, but also teach skills to prevent relapse. TMS therapy for depression If you have major depression that has previously been therapy, medication, and self- help resistant, TMS therapy may be an option. Transcranial magnetic stimulation (TMS) therapy is a non-invasive treatment that directs repeated pulses of magnetic energy to areas of the brain involved in mood. These magnetic pulses pass through the skull painlessly and stimulate brain cells, which can improve communication between different parts of the brain and relieve symptoms of depression. While TMS may be able to improve treatment-resistant depression, it does not mean that it is a cure for depression or that your symptoms will not return. However, it can increase your energy and encourage enough to allow you to start talk therapy or make lifestyle changes — as the term goes.
