  3. Welcome to the Geospatial Management Office • Geospatial Information Officer – Chuck Dull • GIS Program • Remote Sensing Program • Geospatial Services Program • Cartographic production • Map sales program • Geospatial Services and Technology Center (GSTC) • Remote Sensing Application Center (RSAC) • Shared building with USDA Aerial Photography Field Office in Salt Lake City

  4. National Forest System (NFS) Deputy Area • 155 national forests and 20 grasslands organized into 9 Regions. • About 193 million acres • Located in 44 States, Puerto Rico, and the Virgin Islands. • Comprise 8.5 percent of the total land area in the United States.

  5. Forest Service Research and Development: • network of forest and range experiment stations • Forest Products Laboratory • provide the scientific and technical knowledge • State and Private Forestry • work with non-federal entities on • fire management • insect and disease management • urban forestry

  6. International Forestry • formulating policy and coordinating U.S. support for the protection and sound management of the world's forest resources. • Agency Summary • Approximately 40,000 employees and contractors • Over 750 office locations

  7. GIS Data Center Initiative • Migrate from ~180 legacy “cells” scattered across the country • Migrate to Enterprise Data Center at USDA-NITC facility • Thin Client Architecture • Web Services Architecture • Geospatial Services Architecture

  8. GIS Architecture Components

  9. ArcSDE Components • Production SDE Geodatabase • Unit-level spatial data management • Multi-geodatabase schema system • National Application Geodatabases • Transportation • Ownership • Hydrography • Vegetation • etc

  10. ArcSDE Components • Data Warehouse Geodatabases • Data optimized for display and analysis • Future source for GeoData.gov and other public consumption • Raster Geodatabase • Raster-based GIS products • Imagery • DEM • Etc.

  11. Enterprise GIS Statistics • ~ 11,500 GIS users will access the data center • ~4,000 concurrent users after migration • 162 HS-22 Citrix blades at architecture completion • Dual quads • 48 gb RAM • Support 135 concurrent users per blade • 4 Oracle SDE Servers • Current ~800 GB disk storage • Plan to scale up as demand increases

  12. Enterprise GIS Statistics • Raster DB implementation • 2.99 TB current allocation • Image services provided from GSTC/RSAC (Salt Lake site) • Developing a raster/imagery data management strategy for the agency

  13. Enterprise GIS Benefits • Software and Extension management • Corporate Data Standards • Data Access Across Units • Interagency Data Access

  14. Challenges • Elusive Printing and Plotting solution • ThinPrint implementation • Network performance to remote sites • Cordova, Alaska • Last mile and 80% solutions

  15. Lessons Learned • Need to understand GIS business needs for system capacity • Storage capacity needs to be scalable to meet increasing needs of user community • Paradigm shift from distributed to enterprise operations is difficult for the GIS community • Communication, communication, communication!

  16. Future challenges and opportunities • ArcGIS 10 strategy for USDA? • Cloud computing and GIS? • Others? • Discussion!
