Points of Pride: Art • A newly revised curriculum for our “Ceramics, Jewelry and Sculpture” course was a huge success with our students. • POB was given priority for a Tilles Center featured exhibit called, “Candyland.” • 1 student received an award from the “Huntington Camera Club.” • 2 students were identified as Scholar Artists with Excellence in Visual Arts and Music. • 2 students received art scholarships through the Brooke Zimmerman Award and the Art Supervisors Association. • Other Art Department awards: Go Ape Exhibit PTA Reflections Cultural Diversity Holocaust Center Advanced Visions, LIU 12x12 Exhibit, LIU ASA All-County Exhibition LIATA at the Broadway Mall
Points of Pride: Business • Out of 64 students taking the W!SE Financial Literacy Exam, 6 received a perfect score of 100 and all 64 achieved mastery (greater than 85%). • College Marketing: 86% of students enrolled achieved mastery in the course (greater than 85% final grade). • College Accounting: 54% of students enrolled achieved mastery in the course (greater than 85% final grade). • College Business Law: 79% of students enrolled achieved mastery in the course (greater than 85% final grade). • College Business Administration: 98% of students enrolled achieved mastery in the course (greater than 85 % final grade). • College International Business: 100% of students enrolled achieved mastery in the course (greater than 85% final grade). • DECA: 52 students attended the International competition held in Salt Lake City, Utah in April of 2012. 18 placed as finalists in their respective competitions and one team of 3 students placed 3rd overall worldwide. • MOOT Court: POBJFK competed in the Northport Law Day Tournament. One of our teams went on to the final round and came in 2ndplace.
Points of Pride: Music • 5 students selected to Long Island String Festival Secondary Music Festival • 16 students selected to All State Music -8 into ensembles and 8 alternates • 66 students selected to All County Music • 2 ensembles performed at NYSSMA Major Organization Festival: - JFK String Orchestra, Mr. Glenn Rubin – Level 6 Gold - JFK Chamber Orchestra, Mr. Glenn Rubin – Level 6 Gold w Distinction • 194 POBJFK students performed at NYSSMA Solo Festivals. 87% of the students at Levels 1-4 received an Excellent or Outstanding rating. 95% of the students at Levels 5-6 and All State received a Gold rating. • One Scholar Artist Award of Merit in Music
Points of Pride: Science A large number of our students take 4 years of science . For 2012-2013 there were 421 seniors registered science course requests for a class of approximately 417. (Note: Some seniors take more than one science class.) Jordan Pekor was selected to be trained by Texas Instruments this summer at their headquarters in the Nspire product. He has brought back a large resource of materials and hardware for use district-wide. New Course – Health Related Careers and the relationship established with NSLIJ
Points of Pride: Research • Siemens Math, Science and Technology Competition – 3 semi-finalists • Intel Science Talent Search – 4 semi-finalists • DuPont Challenge Competition - 2nd place student in the Nation and 2nd Place Teacher of the Year, Francine Moustakalis. She was has been asked NSTA and DuPont to co-author a book on writing research based essays. She also helped them revise their website this summer. • Junior Science and Humanities Symposium - 5 LI semi-finalists, 2 LI finalists and 1National Finalist • International Sustainable Energy, Engineering, Environmental Project Fair (ISWEEEP) in Houston, Texas - • 3rd place in Environmental Chemistry • Siemens “We Can Change the World Competition” - New York State Finalist Team • 2012 Al Kalfus Math Fair – 3 Finalists • Simons Summer Fellowship for Research at Stony Brook University – 2 students awarded and attended • NYU-Polytechnic University 2012 Summer Research Program. 9 students accepted and attended • NYIT Engineering Fair – 2nd place finalists • 27 students successfully completed a summer of scientific research in University labs and 10 continued behavioral studies. Currently all 37 are working on writing their Intel and Siemens papers.
Points of Pride: Social Studies • Intel STS: 3 Semi-Finalists • New York State Science and Engineering Fair (NYSSEF): Our students won1st, 2nd and 3rd Place Categories • Long Island Science and Engineering Fair (LISEF): 5 Semi-Finalists Long Island Psychology Fair: 1st Place in the Cross Cultural Studies Category 1st Place in the Developmental Psychology Category 2ndPlace in the Health and Epidemiology Category • Junior Science and Humanities Symposium (JSHS): 1 Semi-finalist • Long Island Science Congress: Our students were recognized for Highest Honors,High Honors, Honors and Senior Division Directors Award • Long Island Brain Bee 4th , 6th and 7th Place Awards
Points of Pride: Technology • We are very proud of the increase in enrollment in the technology programs this year resulting in an increase of three instructional sections of technology classes. • POBOTS • Competed in two regional competitions in 2011-2012 • NYC at the Javits Center • LI Regional at Hofstra University • One student was awarded the Dean’s List Award and was featured in a nationwide article in the Huffington Post • POBOTS team was featured in a year-long documentary produced by MSG Varsity on the positive impact of FIRST Robotics on students pursuing futures in engineering and technology. • POBOTS received the website award, Team Spirit Award, and were finalists in the LI Regional.
Points of Pride: World Languages • 11 students recognized as National French “Top Honors” winners • 12 students recognized as National Italian “Top Honors” winners • National Spanish Exam: - 1 Gold Medal Winner - 10 Silver Medal Winners - 21 Bronze Medal Winners • 67 Honorable Mention Recognized Students • Italian 2 and 3 students Skyped with students in Sarrono, Italy. Our students practiced conversing in Italian while their students practiced conversing in English.
