Tip 1: Read the title and subtitles • Before reading the text, read all headings and subheadings surrounding the article. This includes graphs and any pictures that surround the article. • This will help give you an idea on what the article is about.
Tip 2: Ask yourself… • What do I already know about the topic? • What do I need to know/ want to know about the topic? • You may want to look at possible questions at the end of the article before you begin reading? • This way, you will know what to look for while reading
Tip 3: Pay attention to Captions • Captions are ideas or explanations that may be located under graphs, charts, pictures. • EX: Caption
Tip 4: Find the main idea of each paragraph. • Many non- fiction articles have multiple paragraphs. • Search for the main idea of each one. • This will help you focus on what the entire article is about.
