The Use Of Computerized Patient Portals In Healthcare. Presented by Jenna Helman
OBJECTIVES • Describe patient portals • Discuss different uses of patient portals • List healthcare benefits involved with using portals • List hardware used in patient portals • Describe modems • List software used in patient portals • Examples of patient portal software companies
Objectives Continued • Describe e-mail • Describe system used for patient portals • Describe role of nurse informaticist in development of patient portals • Discuss ethical/legal concerns • Monthly budget 2008 • Summary • References
Description • Web site that enables secure exchange of messages between patient and physician • Functions similar to online banking website (password protection and encrypted communications) • Compliant with the Health Insurance Portability and Accountability Act • May include personal health record option online (Adler, 2008)
USES: • Schedule appointments • Request referrals • Request prescription refills • Ask simple questions • Fill out preregistration forms • Have e-visit with your physician • Update or modify Personal Health Record • Bill payments • Patient education materials • Lab test results (Adler, 2008)
“Hospitals are finding that patient portals can help boost patient satisfaction and may even account for more successful clinical outcomes.” (Joch, 2008)
Benefits: • Convenience • Cost Efficiency • Time Efficiency • Improve Productivity • Preventative Health Care Measure • Patient given greater responsibility in own healthcare
Hardware used in Patient Portals: • Internet-capable computer • Keyboard • Modem
Modem • Modulator-demodulator • Device or program that enables a computer to transmit data over telephone or cable lines • Can convert between digital and analog waves (Webopedia, 2008)
Software used in Patient Portals: • Word Processing • E-mail • Graphics Program • Database Management System
Examples of Software Companies for Patient Portals: • Care Converge patient portal solution • http://www.careconverge.com/healthcare/patientportal.htm • Intelligent Medical Software (IMS) • http://www.meditab.com/product-ims/intelligent-medical-software.html
E-mail Fast Flexible Reliable
E-mail • (Electronic mail) - exchange of computer-stored messages by telecommunication • One of the first uses of the Internet • Most popular use of the Internet • All online services and Internet Service Providers offer e-mail • E-mail can be distributed to lists of people as well as to individuals. • Usually takes a few seconds or minutes for mail to arrive at its destination (Webopedia, 2008)
System for Patient Portals • Health Information System (HIS) • Manages data and information used in daily health care organizations • Main functions include supporting communication and organizing data • Other functions include budgets, charges, diagnoses, treatments, evaluations, assessments, and care plans
Role of Nurse Informaticist in Developing Patient Portals • Informatics combines nursing skills with computer expertise. • Nurse communicators are needed to work with the community in identifying important aspects that should be included in patient portals. • Nurses need to assist in the training and implementation of patient portal systems. • By collecting, organizing, measuring and representing data, nurse informaticists can improve the efficiency and quality of patient portals.
Ethical/Legal Concerns • Patient information must be protected at all times. • Patient privacy and confidentiality must be maintained. • HIPPA has mandated standards that must be followed. • Computer hackers who break into secure systems and violate patient privacy and confidentiality.
Summary As you have been informed, patient portals are a great benefit to health care. The new technology is helpful in saving time, money, and energy, while improving productivity and adding convenience. Portals are compliant with HIPPA and privacy and confidentiality are secure features. With the new career of nurse informaticists, health care will see an enhancement in the technology of patient portals.
