  2. Infinitives Remember: -the word to plus a verb -can function as nouns, adjectives, or adverbs; never function as verbs even though they look like verbs -avoid split infinitives, especially in formal writing or speaking

  3. Infinitives We want to write about Life of Pi. Christopher Columbus did not plan to discover the Americas. Because I ran a personal best time, I was allowed to ring the bell at the end of the race.

  4. Gerunds Remember: -always end in ing -always function as nouns; never function as verbs even though they look like verbs -use possessive before a gerund

  5. Gerunds Organizing the pep rally is Emily’s responsibility. Reading a good book is one of my favorite activities. The best way to learn is by making mistakes.

  6. Participles Remember: -end in ing, ed, or en -function as adjectives or adverbs; never function as verbs even though they look like verbs

  7. Participles The man wearing a plaid jacket is the CEO. Items hidden around town were found during our scavenger hunt. The host presented a turkey crammed with duck and chicken.
