The Germans as Immigrants • Germans began settling in large numbers in the 1820s • Because they had more education and wealth than other immigrant groups like the Irish, they were able to move inland away from the corruption and violence of the seaport cities of the Northeast • The Germans bought their own land in PA, NY, OH, WI, IL, and TX

Germans as Immigrants • Germany unified its principalities into one country in 1871 • Immigrants prior to this date were actually from Prussia, Bavaria, Hess, the Rhineland, Pomerania, and Westphalia • The forty-eighters came as refugees from the revolution of 1848 • Other “Germans” Jews, Pietisms, and Anabaptist groups like the Amish and the Mennonites came for religious freedom
