Feasibility of Co-Composting Process of Scum and Night Soil Sludge in FOG Management OmjitSillaparassamee Faculty of Public Health, Mahidol University
Introduction • 54 tons/day of scum has been discarded from 12,000 places of restaurants in Bangkok • Composting is easiness and low cost of operation. http://roongaroonenvironment.blogspot.com/2010_09_01_archive.html http://uniquehomeriview.com/common-good-gardens.html
Introduction • Scum have low nitrogen and phosphorus content • Night soil sludge is high nitrogen concentration. http://roongaroonenvironment.blogspot.com/2010_09_01_archive.html
Objective To determine the potential of co-composting process of scum collected from grease trap and night soil sludge
Methodology Scum Night soil sludge
Methodology Physicochemical properties of scum and night soil sludge
Methodology Scum C:N ratio 30:1 and moisture content at 40-60% + Night soil sludge
Methodology • Turning frequency at every • 4 days • Temperature monitoring every day • Determination of Total organic carbon, Total nitrogen , FOG and pH Temperature monitored point Compost Temperature monitoring
Results and Discussions • The temperature of • compost pile started at 33C. • The maximum temperature was 50C at day 12. • The optimal composting • time was at day 110.
Results and Discussions • TOC concentration slowly decreased from 44.10% to 34.89% by weight at the end of process. • The reduction of TOC indicates decomposition of organic matter by the microorganisms.
Results and Discussions Characteristics of Compost Source: * Land Development Department, Thailand,2002
Conclusion • Co-composting process of scum and night soil sludge can be used in management of scum from grease trap and night soil sludge. • Characteristic of compost meets to the compost standard. • Retention time of composting process is about 110 days at C:N ratio30:1.
