Productive vs. Destructive Productive Destructive Narrow the conflict in terms of definition, focus and issues. Limit conflict to the original issue. Direct the conflict toward cooperative problem solving. Trust leadership that stresses mutually satisfactory outcomes. Escalate issues or negative attitudes. Expand from the original issue, leaving the whole relationship open for conflict. Power, threats, coercion and deception strategies are used for problem solving. Stay single-minded and act upon militant leadership.
Dealing With Conflict Stay centered and do not polarize. Maintain contact. Recognize the existence of different styles. Identify your preferred style. Be creative and expand your style repertoire. Recognize the importance of conflict context. Be willing to forgive.
Mediation At times, 2 people are not able to settle conflict alone. Often a third party is needed (lawyers or counselors). Relies on disputing parties’ active involvement in and commitment to the resolution.

Real Life Example “Two female adult educators -- an American and a Saudi -- working within continuing education at a private women's college in Jeddah, Saudi Arabia. Graduates of the same U.S. doctoral programme, and good friends, they expected that their working styles would be consistent and complementary; yet that proved very different in real experience. Findings demonstrate that absence of preliminary understanding of cultural differences may adversely impact both personal and professional relationships”(Glowacki-Dudka, Usman, Treff, 2008).
