  2. Our Element info.?? • Element symbol = Co • Element name = Cobalt • Atomic Number = 27 • Atomic mass is = 55.845 (56) • It is a solid • It is a metal • It is in group nine and the name of the family is the transition metal • Georg Brandt discovered it in 1739.

  3. How is it Used???..!! • It is used in electroplating because of its hardness and resists and oxidation. • It is used in electroplating to give objects an attractive surface that resists oxidation. It is more widely used to form alloys. • Cobalt Chromium and tungsten may be alloyed to form satellite, which is used for high temperature, high speed cutting tools, and dies.

  4. Physical Chemical Properties • A hard silvery – gray metal, brittle metal. • Melting point of 1495 degrees Celsius • Boiling point of 2870 degrees Celsius • Specific gravity of 8.9(20 degrees Celsius) with a valence of 2 or 3. • Magnetic permeability around 2/3 that of iron.

  5. Interesting facts!!! • Cobalt is used to make a rare amphetamine called cometh it can get you super high. • Single compact of cobalt -60 vary from 1-10 dollars/curie depending on quantity and specific activity. The name cobalt comes from the German word kobalt , meaning evil spirit, the metal being so called by miners because it was poisonous.

  6. Interesting Facts • Cobalt carefully used in the form of the chloride, sulfate, acetate, or nitrate has been found effective in correcting a certain mineral deficiency disease in animals Cobalt salts have been used for centuries to produce brilliant and permanent blue colors in porcelain, glass, pottery, tiles, and enamels. Important ore deposits are found in Zaire, Morocco, and Canada. The U.S. Geological Survey has announced that the bottom of the north central Pacific Ocean may have cobalt-rich deposits at relatively shallow depths in water close to the Hawaiian Islands and other U.S. Pacific territories.
