Key political features (Buzzle.com) “The 1950’s were one of the most turbulent decades in global politics, containing some seminal political events.” In the 1950’s Eisenhower (president), whose critics made him out to be a great general but not a sturdy Politian. Also in the 1950’s a post war occurred involving communism. The war was called Red Scare. 50,000 Americans out of a total U.S. population of 150 million were members of the Communist party. According to Wendy Wall the anti-Communist crusade of the late 1940s and 1950s extended both in time and scope well beyond the activities of the junior senator from Wisconsin. Even though the Great Depression and WWll had just ended the 1950’s were known to be peaceful. But there was still a lot of conflict because of the black listing due to the Red Scare.

  3. Trends And Fads In the 1950’s many new things were invented, and they were all known to be quite useful. Colored TV was introduced. Not many people had colored TV because you basically had to be rich. But it wasn’t such a bad thing is you couldn’t even afford a TV because drive –in movie theaters were also invented. If you didn’t have the money to afford a new TV then you could go to a drive-in in your car and watch movies on a huge TV that projects movies. Many other trendy things were invented as well such as: sock hops, spud guns, side burns, Gumby, whiffle ball, bubblegum cigars, Quiff hairdo, hokey pokey, saddle shoes, Jukeboxes, fast food, abstract expressionism, pompadour hairdo, waiter/waitress on roller skates, Elvis, Mr. Potato head, hula hoop, silly putty, and Blue jeans.   4. Speeches and Quotes There were many speeches and Quotes in the 1950’s. One of the major speeches that took place on December 10th , 1950 called the Banquet speech. William Faulkner wrote this speech and it was about an award that he had received this award because he put in a life’s work in the agony and sweat of the human spirit. A famous quote was stated by president Eisenhower stating “I think that people want peace so much that one of these days government had better get out of their way and let them have it”. Another one by Eisenhower stated “Only Americans can hurt America”. To this day these speeches and quotes are still considered very famous. But I am sure that they helped people out with different points of view on life.

  5. Popular Entertainment and Entertainers Entertainment was very famous in the 1950’s. There were many new things that were being invented and brand new entertainers. The first one is Elvis. Elvis was a very famous singer and actor. He has remained one of the worlds most popular icons since his death on August 16th, 1977 at the age of 42. Elvis is one of the biggest names of rock and roll. Other famous entertainment was a TV show called “I Love Lucy” starring Lucille Ball, a series that ran from October 15th , 1951, to May 6th , 1957. The series was about a women who pushes to become a star along with her bandleader husband, but gets herself into weird situations. Another famous entertainer from the 1950’s was Marilyn Monroe who was the worlds biggest and most enduring sex symbols. She grew up in a foster home and an orphanage after a rough childhood. The 1950’s were very relaxed and considered simple times, so nothing but good entertainment would only make things simpler. Music in the 1950’s In the 1950’s Music was something that reflected the way that times had changed and cultural changes that were occurring while holding on to what was normal with society from the past. According to thepeoplehistory.com “racial tensions were being strained with the beginning of the civil rights movement and music reflected many of those tensions. Rhythm & Blues (R&B) and Rock 'n' Roll popularized "black" music and many African-American musicians rose to prominence and enjoyed success, but while some were able to reap the benefits of their work, many others were forgotten or denied access to audiences through segregation.” Popular musicians in the 1950’s is Chuck Berry, Elvis Presley, Johnny Burnette,

  7. Important Sports figures/happenings Since World War II had ended it gave Americans more of a chance to enjoy sports. In Baseball the Jets took profession from a very popular, and dominate game to our nation. According to ewow.com,“when the Brooklyn Dodgers and New York Giants took their rivalry from the boroughs of New York to the West Coast after the 1957 season, the game became a ubiquitous and symbolic image of American pride.” In football the Baltimore Colts defeated the New York Giants 23-17 in overtime in the 1958 championship NFL game. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=wwG3qDGksfk

  8. Scientists and Inventors Christopher Cockerell was a scientist in the 1950’s who invented the hovercraft. The hovercraft floats floats through air over a water surface. Ralph Schneider and Frank McNamara invented the credit card in 1950. The credit card is a plastic card that makes it so that somebody does not need to carry cash. In 1939 Francois Hussenot and Paul Beaudouin invented the Black Box flight recorder. It was the first prototype meant for a civilian aircraft.

  9. Significant Artists and art movements At the end of WWII art became a big thing. It brought thousands of young servicemen back to America to pick up their lives and start new families. After WWII ended there was a fresh artistic outlook and the artistic world reflected this outlook. Many of peoples artistic talents were able to sell and people were able to make a decent amount of money to turn the world around and make most people comfortably living. A lot of famous artists in the 1950’s were Jackson Pollock, Barnett Newman, Willem De Kooning, and Henry Clay Anderson.

  11. Historical Events One of the major historical events that occurred in the 1950’s was the Korean War. The Korean war was the intensification of the cold war. It was caused because when the soviets detonated their first thermonuclear device, the United states had to revise its thinking on many defense issues. According to (Cna.org) “selection of weapons for naval air attacks on tactical targets, scheduling of close air support, analysis of air-to-air combat, Naval gunfire in shore bombardment, blockade tactics, and interdiction of land transportation”. It is known as one of a specific tactical problem that they were facing during the Korean War. After the war ended it changed the nature of OEG’s activity. It helped to formulate U.S. military needs on a nuclear and conventional level.
