Physicians as Ambassadors for Changein Vaccination of all Eligible Adults 50+ Objective: Increase vaccination of all appropriate patients/families that participants see in their practices Methods: • Participants were presented with scenarios concerning when a 50+ years patient and various family members arrive for a non-vaccine appointment • Participants were asked to consider the percentage probability of having a PD vaccination discussion • Participants were asked to consider the percentage probability that discussion will lead to a vaccination • Participants discussed key communication points with a consideration of 3 unique scenarios: • Vaccination of the reluctant 50+ years patient • Vaccination of the 50+ years non-patient family member • Vaccination of the 50+ years patient with chronic diseases
Worksheet: Physicians as Ambassadors for Change in Vaccination of all Eligible Adults 50+
Probability of Having a PD Discussion with a 50+ Year Old in for a Non-Vaccines Visit*(Workshop 1: Physicians as Ambassadors for Change) * Probability % data collected from completed worksheets
Probability of Vaccinating the 50+ Year Old Patient* (Workshop 1: Physicians as Ambassadors for Change) * Probability % data collected from completed worksheets
Key Learnings: Barriers(Workshop 1: Physicians as Ambassadors for Change) Storage and patient availability • Many offices do not have refrigeration • Follow-up appointments for vaccination later may not return Physician lack of knowledge and/or motivation • Never the “right moment” to discuss with a patient that is already chronically ill • Assumptions that another doctor has already discussed vaccination • Adverse effects, pain, and cost • No healthcare coverage for vaccination Patient aversion
Key Learnings: Solutions(Workshop 1: Physicians as Ambassadors for Change) • Vaccination should be discussed regularly at check-ups for 50+ patients, with the vaccine available at that time Storage and patient availability • Must place vaccination into context to educate on true benefits of protection against illness • Communication is key • Save time with questionnaire to test patients and family members’ PD knowledge Physician lack of knowledge and/or motivation • Point out to 50+ patients that they are still at a productive age, must continue to be healthy • The opportunity to be an “active” grandparent will resonate with many older patients • Doctors must show patients that cost is minimal compared with costs of treating illness Patient aversion
