  10. Les verbes de cette semaine: • Travailler: to work • Jouer: to play • Écouter: to listen • Aller: to go For verb #4 is one of the grammarconcepts for the day…

  11. Verb time line Simple:

  12. PAST TENSE: Before you can talk about actions that occurred in the past, you need to know two important irregular verbs, avoir and être- ‘to have’ and ‘to be’, in the present tense.

  13. When you create the past tense • You will use TWO verbs; a conjugated form of either avoiror être from above, and the participle passé of the second verb. (There are irregulars!! Look out!!) • When do you use AVOIR and when do you use ETRE?

  14. Draw a house… DevenirRevenir &MonterResterSortirVenirAllerNaîtreDescendreEntrerRentrerTomberRetournerArriverMourirPartir

  15. The past participle is created from –er / -ir / -re verbs in this way: • For –er, drop the –er and add an ‘é’ • For –ir, drop the –ir and add an ‘i’ • For –re, drop the –re and add a ‘u’ **Take a moment to make the PAST PARTICIPLE of this week’s 3 verbs** Travailler: travaillé Jouer: joué Écouter: écouté Aller: allé

  16. Pratiquez: • I hadworked six hours. • Welistened to the lecture. • You played soccer. • Shewent to Paris. J’aitravaillé pour 6 heures. Nous avonsécouté à la lecture. Tu as joué le foot. -or- Vousavezjoué le foot. Elle estallé à Paris

  17. The irregularverb ALLER In the words of Ricky Martin: Herewe go, ALLEZ, ALLEZ, ALLEZ!

  18. What does it mean to be irregular? Irregular means that the verb, when conjugated, does not follow the predictable pattern. In other words, an irregular –er verb cannot be conjugated simply by adding the memorized endings:

  19. How do we conjugate them? Simply put, you need to memorize which ones are considered irregular and how they are conjugated. Don’t be afraid of these! Most irregular verbs are used frequently so you will master them in no time, especially if you practice 

  20. Irregular –er verb: Aller This is one of the most used verbs in French and English Aller: to go How often do you say the word “go” in English? Try telling your partner what you do during the day without saying it…it’s difficult!

  21. Aller

  22. Activité:Match the English phrase to the French équivalent on the right. • You all go to the beach in summer. • You go to your house afterschool. • They are going to the movies Saturday night. • I amgoing to the grocery store to buyfood. • We go to the mountainseverywinter. • He goes to schoolatseventhirty. • Elles vont au cinéma samedi soir. • Je vais au supermarché pour acheter la nourriture. • Nous allons aux montagnes chaque hiver. • Tu vas chez toi après l’école. • Il va à l’école à 7h30. • Vous allez à la plage dans l’été.

  23. Le Futur Proche • How wouldyousaythatyou are GOING to do something, say for instance, I am GOING to walk to school? • We know that ‘to go’ is « aller » and ‘to walk’ is « marcher » • Wejustreviewedthe conjugations for ALLER- I go/ I amgoing, You go/You are going, etc…

  24. BACK UP! • We know verbs have two parts, a STEM and an ENDING, in this cause is all- and –er • Whatdoes « -er » mean? • YES, -er means « to » in English. • What do youthink, then, we do with the second verb? • If yousaidleaveitunconjugated (with –er/-ir/-releft on the verb) thenyou’re RIGHT!

  25. Les exemples: • I amgoingto go to the office. • Je vaisaller au bureau • You are goingto go home. • Tu vasaller chez toi. • He isgoingto love thismovie. • Il vasaimer ce film. • Weare goingto walk to the park • Nous allonsmarcher au parc.

  26. Traduction- Translate: Are we going to talk to the teacher? D and M are going to go to the cafeteria They are going to play tennis. I am not going to go to the movies. He is going to dance in the theater. She is not going to play volleyball. They are going to eat the entire pizza! It is going to enter through the door. Are you going to work with Paul?
