Do curfews keep teens out of trouble? By: Ally Mills
Curfews • Most cities in the U.S. have curfew laws for teens under the age of 18. • Most curfews start at 10 p.mp or 11 p.m. and end at 6 a.m.
Nationwide, more than 80% of juvenile offenses take place between 9 a.m. and 10 p.m., which is outside of most curfews.
In April of 2012, a group of teens attacked two older men outside of a gas station. The 911 call came in at 11:18 p.m., which was after curfew. If these teens had been following curfew this would not have happened. Only one of these teens were arrested and charged.
Juvenile Crime Rate • During the months of July and August, when curfew wasn’t enforced juvenile crime rate decreased by 12%.
Several studies have indicated that curfews displace crime to other times of the day without having any real impact over the long run. • In Detroit, juvenile crime dropped 6 percent during curfew hours, but increased 13 percent in the mid-afternoon.
No matter what the curfew is, if a teenager wants to commit a crime or stay out late they will find a way to do so. A curfew is not going to stop them!
Some people believe curfew is just a way for police officers to target teens or people who look like teens.
As curfew laws gain popularity, teenagers try harder to oppose them.
If I have a curfew by anybody, it should be set by my parents, not somebody I don’t know.
GO HOME, YOU! IT’S AFTER 6:00! “I promised my dad I’d be home by ten, but I didn’t say if that was P.M. or A.M.”
This is a story from a newspaper somewhere letting everyone know that curfew law was infect as of that day.
My opinion… • There is no solid evidence that crime rate is lowered by curfew!
So, what do y’all think about curfew laws? • Do you think we should have them? • Or do you think we shouldn’t?
