  1. OSU Archives’ Historical Collections Documenting the Extension Service

Why Use Historical Materials? • To understand the background for current policies and programs. • To document changes through time. • For biographical research on former faculty, staff, or volunteers. • To honor and celebrate the rich history of Extension Service in Oregon, which will have its 100th anniversary in 2011.

  3. Overview • Provide summary information about the scope and variety of collections as well as highlight specific collections. • Refer to 2-page list of Extension Service related collections. • Describe how to access and use the collections.

  4. About the List • Information about most of these collections on Archives website: http://osulibrary.oregonstate.edu/archives/ • Dates after title are for materials in the collection.

  5. Extension Administration Records • RG 111 (Extension Service Records) is cornerstone • EESC (RG 069) and Forestry Extension (RG 103) are separate collections. • Also records of colleges and department with extension activities • KOAC (RG 015)

  6. Faculty Papers and Organizational Records • ~20 collections of Extension faculty or volunteers • Represent variety of extension activities • 4-H • Home Economics • Agriculture • Forestry • 7 collections of organizational records • County organizations • Faculty and staff organizations

  7. Photographs • More than 25,000 images in the collections identified on the list. • Fraction of images documenting extension activities. • Rich resource.

  8. Moving Images • More than 2700 motion picture films, videotapes, and DVDs – including 1700 in EESC Moving Images collection. • Some of earliest films in the Archives’ collections are of Extension activities • mid-1920s 4-H (Coos, Douglas, Klamath, Josephine Counties) • 4-H Summer School (1925) • State Fair

Oral Histories • 2 oral history interviews conducted previously (Mikesell and Taskerud) • Current oral history project in conjunction with the Extension Service. • About 15-20 Extension faculty and staff being interviewed by contract oral historian; recordings and transcripts will be available online and in the Archives’ collections.
