Atomic number (A#) Atomic number • Definition: # of protons in a element • Found on the periodic table • Unique to individual elements; NEVER CHANGES!!!!! • In a neutral element: # protons = # electrons 7 N 14.007
Mass number (M#) • Defn: mass of the atom • Found by adding # of protons and # of neutrons • Represents the number of particles in the nucleus • This is NOT the number on the periodic table!!!!
