  1. Matter Matters Matter, matter everywhere Except in a vacuum of course Chemistry is the study of matter Its changes and interactions What is matter?

  2. Does Matter, Matter? • YWBAT: • Describe the different phases of matter; • Distinguish between physical and chemical changes; • Describe the composition of matter on the atomic level; • Differentiate among elements, compounds, and mixtures; • Recognize common chemical symbols, formulas; • Demonstrate understanding of subscripts and coefficients in simple chemical formulas; • Describe an ion and its role in chemical bonding; • Explain the organization of the periodic table.

  3. MATTER IS THE STUFF AROUND YOU • Matter is everything around you. Matter is everything made of atoms and molecules. Matter is anything that has mass and takes up space. Matter is also related to light and electromagnetic radiation. Even though matter can be found all over the universe, you usually find it in just a few forms. As of 1995, scientists have identified five states of matter. They may discover one more by the time you get old.

  4. STATES OF MATTER • There are five states or phases of matter. Solids, liquids, gases, plasmas, and Bose-Einstein condensates are all different states of matter. Elements and compounds can move from one phase to another phase when special physical forces (ie – temperature) are present. Generally, as the temperature rises, matter moves to a more active state.

  5. Physical Changes Phase describes a physical state of matter. The key word to notice is physical. Things only move from one phase to another by physical means. If energy is added (like increasing the temperature or increasing pressure) or if energy is taken away (like freezing something or decreasing pressure) you have created a physical change. Changing states of matter is about changing properties -densities, pressures, and temperatures. The basic chemical structure does not change. Can happen in any proportions.

  6. Chemical Changes • Chemical changes happen on a molecular level. It involves some sort of change in the basic chemical structure. Energy is released or absorbed – never destroyed An example is when acid is poured on something, and it dissolves.                                                                 Elements and compounds can move from one

  7. Remember that when a physical change occurs, some properties change, but the identity of the substance remains the same. Mixtures Solutions Back to Physical Changes

  8. Back to Chemical Changes • To understand chemical changes, one must understand the structure of matter. • Atoms • Elements & Periodic Table • Reactions
