Background and Development of New Measures Initiative • Collaboration between the Statistics and Measurement and the Research Library Leadership and Management Committees • Areas of interest characterized at January 1999 retreat in Tucson • White papers addressed possible areas for investigation • Areas of interest and topics for investigation tested with members at May 1999 ARL meeting • From May to October 1999, topics were explored with members, experts, and others interested in new measures • Identification of specific projects to be undertaken

ARL New Measures Initiative Projects • Investigation of outcomes research • Demonstration studies of service effectiveness measures • Project on defining usage measures for electronic information resources • Identification of cost drivers in libraries • Develop assisted self-study program applying the results of the ILL/DD studies
