  1. Welcome to Back to School Night! • Meyerholz Elementary School • 2012-2013 School Year • 4th grade CLIP • Ms. Ann Chiang: room 13 • Ms. Yin Yin Pao: room 15

  2. Message from the secretary • It is very important to have all adults on campus check into the office first. If they are not wearing a badge, they did not check into the office. • This even includes parents who deliver lunches "for a quick second" to the students at lunch time. (sometimes even at the lunch tables)

  3. Room Parent Training • There are two room parent trainings: • Wednesday, September 9 at 8:35 am • Thursday, September 6 at 2:45 pm • Location: GLC • You only need to attend one of the trainings.

  4. Project Cornerstone • Project Cornerstone is a community-building curriculum that focuses on developmental assets where all adults support children so that they thrive. • We need: 1 parent from each classroom • Requirements: One-hour training and one-hour reading session per month/lesson. • The estimated time to prepare the lesson is 2-5 hours.

  5. Traffic Help Needed • Traffic safety is an important issue for our kids and the community during the drop off and pick up times. The Traffic Safety Committee is intent to raise the focus of our kids’ safety as well as the drivers’ awareness around the school area. By being a part of traffic supervision team, parents can take this opportunity to slow down, observe the traffic pattern, and help ensure every child’s safety. We have wonderful volunteers, but not enough to cover both parking lots each day. As a result, classrooms will begin covering traffic volunteer spots on a rotational basis.   9. Homework • Given Monday-Thursday • Green homework folder • Daily homework: • Reading log: read at least 20 minutes a day and log. Response to literature once/week. • Math • Spelling/vocabulary • Home-school journal: Goes home each Friday, to be returned on Monday • Job for parents: check agenda, name/number, check homework for completion and accuracy.

  10. Late/Missing Work Late or missing unexcused homework/class work will be noted in the weekly Thursday folder. Students will be asked to complete missing homework during recess and/or take home to finish. Late homework is accepted.

  11. Curriculum Overview Reading:Variety of comprehension strategies and literature study. Writing: Summaries, informational reports, narratives. Listening and Speaking: presentations/poetry recitation/readers’ theater Math: number sense (larger numbers/operations), problem solving, geometry/measurement, algebra functions Science: Environments, Solid Earth, Electricity and Magnetism

The goals of our Chinese language arts program: • Read a wide variety of literature with fluency and comprehension • Develop character identification and word formation skills for a foundation of reading success (150-160 new characters for this grade level). • Develop strong communication skills through an integrated program of reading, writing, speaking, and listening. • Participate in activities that promote comprehension and the development of thinking skills. • Understand and practice the rules of grammar, mechanics, and character writing through a variety of activities. • Incorporate critical thinking and problem-solving skills.

Homework 家庭作業 • Daily Homework (Monday through Thursday): The Chinese workbook normally includes writing characters, making sentences, reading comprehension, response writing, and daily pleasure reading. • Reading Log • Writing Project • Chinese Language Arts and Social Studies related worksheets • Social Science (lesson outlines; note-taking)

  22. IV. Tests and Assessments 測驗與評量 • Pre-assessments in the beginning of the school year • Weekly Chinese word and pinyin test on Fridays • Unit Tests for Social Studies upon the completion of each unit/lessons • Comprehensive Chinese Exam at the end of each trimester

Get Organized and Be Responsible • Organization is the key to success! • Students are responsible to bring their personal binder to school every day with his/her agenda and homework folders (both English and Chinese) inside the binder. • Students are also responsible to bring their Mei Zhou Hua Yu and Social Studies textbooks to school everyday. • Keep Mei Zhou Hua Yu flashcards at home for practice. • Mei Zhou Hua Yu worksheets are kept in class.

  27. What is CLIPCO? The Cupertino Language Immersion Program Community Organization

  28. What does CLIPCO do? CLIPCO is a non-profit 501(c)(3) foundation Fundraise -- Our main goal is to raise money to pay for your child’s bilingual education (program needs), as CUSD does not pay for the Chinese portion. We DO NOT decide on what to fund – we just raise the money for the priorities created by the CAC (CLIP Advisory Committee) CLIPCO also organizes community events to bring our CLIP families together.

  29. Who is CLIPCO?Our organization is made up of: CLIPCO Officers CLIPCO Grade Representatives (voting) Administration Other Non-Fundraising functions

  30. CLIPCO also has Non-Fundraising functions under its umbrella. After School Enrichment Program (ASEP) Spring Banquet Chinese Language Contests (CLC)  All costs are covered by participant fees, and other fundraisers. We do not use donated funds!

  31. Your donation of $500/$250 is how CLIPCO funds the Program Needs and the Operating Expenses. The Direct Give Campaign asks each family to donate their child's share of their CLIP education. 96% of your donation goes directly towards the "Program Needs" as budgeted by CAC. 4% goes to pay for G&A expenses. 

  32. CLIPCO has Operating Expenses --General and Administrative Activities. Liability insurance Tax accounting services Taxes Bank & credit card fees Dues Newsletters, Printing Miscellaneous supplies, etc.

  33. How does CLIPCO Raise Money? Direct Give Campaign is our biggest fundraiser. The majority of these funds pay for your child’s bilingual education. All CLIP families should pay for their child’s share of the CLIP educational expenses. $500/child at Meyerholz, $250/child at Miller
