Grade Level Expectations • 2nd graders should become independent workers • 2nd graders should be able to read and follow directions on their own • Work should be completed in a reasonable amount of time • Homework should be checked every night by parent • Homework folder should be checked every night by parent
Behavior Expectations • Students are expected to follow basic classroom / school rules • Follow teacher’s direction the first time • Talk at appropriate times • Keep hands and feet to self • Complete all seat work during allotted time • Raise hand to talk • Treat others the way you want to be treated
Writing • Students should be able to write a complete sentence • Teachers use the “CUPS” system • C Capitalization • U Usage • P Punctuation • S Spelling • By the end of the year, students should be able to write a paragraph with a topic sentence and some supporting details • Students should be able to write legibly using lines and spaces correctly • Students will have “writing collections” that will go with them to the 3rd grade

Reading: Additional Assessments • Bear Spelling Inventory • This test is designed to assess the word knowledge elementary students have to bring to the tasks of reading and spelling • Fry High Frequency Word Lists • This test contains ten lists of 100 high frequency words. Words on these lists are the most used words in reading and writing and make up almost half of the words met in any reading task
Reading: Accelerated Reader • Students need: • 15 points by December for Popcorn Party • 30 points by May for Ice Cream Party
Other Information • Field trips: • Lexington Children’s Theater September 26th • GattiTown February TBD • Earth Day play May TBD • Fee waivers (up to $15) • Earth Day t-shirts $2 • End-of-the-Year Awards awards are given to students based on academic performance, effort and behavior
How do I help my child? • Reading • If your child stops when reading, WAIT. Give your child time to solve the problem. • ASK • “What can you try?” • “Think about the story. What makes sense?” • After two tries tell them the word. • Math • Go over math papers at home • Practice facts every day
