Be Real --1 John-- Warren Wiersbe Chapter 4- The Love God Hates
CHAPTER 4-The Love God Hates (1 JOHN 2:12-17) • 1 John 2:12-17 • 12 I write to you, little children, Because your sins are forgiven you for His name’s sake.13 I write to you, fathers, Because you have known Him who is from the beginning. I write to you, young men, Because you have overcome the wicked one. I write to you, little children, Because you have known the Father.14 I have written to you, fathers, Because you have known Him who is from the beginning. I have written to you, young men, Because you are strong, and the word of God abides in you, And you have overcome the wicked one.15 Do not love the world or the things in the world. If anyone loves the world, the love of the Father is not in him.16 For all that is in the world—the lust of the flesh, the lust of the eyes, and the pride of life—is not of the Father but is of the world.17 And the world is passing away, and the lust of it; but he who does the will of God abides forever.
Do not love the world or the things in the world • world= • The earth- “God that has made the world and all things therein…”, Acts 17:24 • Mankind-”For God so loved the world…” John 3:16a “He was in the world, and the world[earth] was made by Him, and the world [mankind] knew him not.” John 1:10 He “giveth us richly all things to enjoy,” 1 Timothy 6:17 • Invisible spiritual system opposed to God and Christ 1 John 5:19, “We know that we are of God, and the whole world lies under the sway of the wicked one.” John 12:31, “…the prince of this world…” Luke 16:8, “…the children of this world…”
Discussion Questions • What are some characteristics of “the world” as John uses the term? • Why does God hate the love of the world? • What is your definition of worldliness? • Does your definition of worldliness square with God’s definition?
Four Reasons to hate the world • Because of what the World Is • Because of what the World Does To Us (2:15-16) • 15 Do not love the world or the things in the world. If anyone loves the world, the love of the Father is not in him.16 For all that is in the world—the lust of the flesh, the lust of the eyes, and the pride of life—is not of the Father but is of the world.17 And the world is passing away, and the lust of it; but he who does the will of God abides forever. • “Worldliness is not so much a matter of activity as of attitude. It is possible for a Christian to stay away from questionable amusement and doubtful places and still love the world, for worldliness is a matter of the heart. To the extent that a Christian loves the world system and the things in it, he does not love the Father.” Wiersbe
Because of What the World Does To Us Three Devices Used to Trap Christians • The lust of the flesh • Anything that appeals the our fleshly nature, this can include both sinful things and desires that are not intrinsically sinful. • What are examples of the lust of the flesh? • The lust of the eyes • The eyes are a gateway into the mind and this lust can include intellectual pursuits, or mere desires that are aroused by what the eye sees. • What are examples of the lust of the eyes? • The pride of life • The pride of life is the wrongly directed desire for importance, significance and self-worth. It is this sin that led Lucifer to fall from glory! • What are examples of the pride of life?
Four Reasons to hate the world • Because of what the World Is • Because of what the World Does To Us (2:15-16) • Because of what a Christian Is (2:12-14) • 12 I write to you, little children, Because your sins are forgiven you for His name’s sake.13 I write to you, fathers, Because you have known Him who is from the beginning. I write to you, young men, Because you have overcome the wicked one. I write to you, little children, Because you have known the Father.14 I have written to you, fathers, Because you have known Him who is from the beginning. I have written to you, young men, Because you are strong, and the word of God abides in you, And you have overcome the wicked one.
Because of What a Christian Is • Fathers=mature believers • have an intimate personal knowledge of God. They are aware of the dangers of the world • Young men=the conquerors • They have overcome the wicked one by the abiding Word of God • Little children=immature ones • Little children under the authority of teachers and tutors. They are not yet “grown up.”
Four Reasons to hate the world • Because of what the World Is • Because of what the World Does To Us (2:15-16) • Because of what a Christian Is (2:12-14) • Because of where the World is going (2:17) • THE WORLD IS PASSING AWAY!!!
Discussion Questions • What are some ways in which you are tempted to worldliness? • How does God’s Word help us defeat Satan’s efforts to lure us into worldliness? • Why does godliness require more than avoiding evil and doing good? • What does staying only loosely attached to the world involve for you, in practical terms? Since this world is passing and we are just “tenting”, don’t put your tent pegs in too deep!
