Hardware • Motherboard • CPU • RAM • BIOS Chip • CMOS Battery • CPU Fan • CPU Heat Sink • Adaptor Cards • Expansion Slots
The Computer Case • Types of cases: • Tower • Desktop • Needs Air flow • Openings • Fan to circulate air
Power Supply • Control electricity to the computer • Reduces 120 volts of power to a form that will not harm the electronics. • Rated at 300 Watts
Motherboard • The main circuit board in the computer • All other parts connect to the motherboard
Cpu-central Processing Unit • Located in the motherboard • The computer chip that processes data
C.P.U 2 • When the cpu receives and carries out an instruction it has completed one cycle • Cpu speed= number of cycles in one cycle • Cycles are measured in gigahertz GHz
RAM- Random Access Memory • Located on the mother board • used to store information which the computer is currently using • It’s a temporary memory, once the power is off the info is lost. • RAM is measured in GB
CPU Fan/Heat Sink • Computer electronics generate huge amounts of heat • Fans and heat sinks help cool electronics
BIOS Chip • BIOS basic input output chip • A type of ROM used by the computer to instruct the system when starting up
CMOS and CMOS Battery • Complementary metal–oxide–semiconductor • Located on the mother board • CMOS allows a computer to store info even when the power is off
Adapter Cards • Allow other devices to connect to the mother board • Video card • Sound card • Network card
Video Card- GPU • High end video cards are available that have their own processors, called GPU • GPU= Graphics processing unit
Intergraded Video Sound And Network On The Motherboard • Video sound and network often built in to the motherboard • This is known as a intergraded motherboard
Hard Disk Drive • The primary storage device for the computer • The hard drive holds the operating system, programs and data files. • Its where data goes when saved
Hard Disk Drive 2 • It’s a spinning disk . Data is saved in sectors on the disk • A moving arm reads data from the disk • Storage • Capacity is measured in GB and TB
CD/DVD Drive • Device that reads and writes data to a compact disc • Uses optics/laser to communicate
Power Cables and ribbon Cables Ribbon Cable • Many wires are joined in gray or rainbow colors Power Cables • Single wires that are usually colored
Ribbon Cable • Power Cables • Heat sink • Adapter Card • BIOS Chip • RAM
Power Supply • CD/DVD Drive • CPU • Hard Drive
