Harmful Algal BloomMobile Application Challenge Friday, May 30, 2014
What are Harmful Algal Blooms? • Cyanobacteria (also known as blue-green algae) are microscopic organisms that can sometimes multiply to form harmful algal blooms (HABs).
HAB Reporting • OhioEPA has a very comprehensive HAB Reporting process • However, it is based on a PDF form
The Challenge Part #1 • Algal Bloom color detecting functionality • Automatically draw a boundary around an algal bloom from a photo • Suggest a color of the HAB based off of a predefined color palette • Ask a series of questions
The Challenge Part #2 • Develop the overall application that submits data to an email and/or National Geographic’s Field Scope Project which replaces OhioEPA’s pdf form • Include a Social Login Feature • Interface with weather.gov and Water Quality Portal APIs • Ask users a series of questions
