Climate • Harsh weather despite a southern location • Cold winters due mainly to high altitude throughout the country • Inland plateau areas are dry due to moisture being blocked by mountains • Some regions have up to 20 inches of rain a year, while others have as little as 5 to 10 inches • In Istanbul, it is not uncommon to have snow storms in the winter
Vegetation • Vegetation is limited with many treeless barren grasslands • Despite popular belief, Turkey is not mainly desert land • In the mountain and plateau regions, tulips and other flowers bloom in the spring • The coastal regions along the Mediterranean have abundant pine, oak, cedar, and juniper trees
Current Governement • Parliamentary representative democracy • Very secular state; Islam is not the official religion like in most other Muslim nations • President (largely ceremonial)- Abdullah Gül • Prime Minister (executive power)- RecepTayyipErdoğan • Very progressive when compared to other NASACA countries (i.e. headscarf ban, universal sufferage)
