Viruses. What is A Virus?. C omputer viruses are man-made, pieces of code or programs that replicate and attach to other programs or files without the knowledge of a user. Much like a human virus, computer viruses vary in the damage they cause.

What is A Virus? • Computer viruses are man-made, pieces of code or programs that replicate and attach to other programs or files without the knowledge of a user. • Much like a human virus, computer viruses vary in the damage they cause. • Some of these malicious programs can be annoyingly pestilent causing pop-ups to appear on your desktop. • Other viruses can cause severe damage by sharing sensitive information , corrupting a computer’s memory or even damaging it’s hardware and software irrevocably.

  3. Scenario • There are many instances where the ethical issue of viruses can and will affect an educator in the classroom. The first thought to instantly cross my mind when discussing this issue is the very safety of any students I may have. Some might ask why that would be the first thing that comes to mind? Well, I’ll briefly explain why with a scenario. Let us say, I have a laptop or desktop computer in my classroom that I use for all of my work related material. I use it for extensive research on class projects that I have my students work on. Nowadays, viruses can be found anywhere and everywhere. While I was researching snakes I found that I had caught a virus that affected my computer severely. I caught a virus on a computer that has sensitive material about my students. It has their phone numbers, addresses, and any images I may have saved of my students. This is private information that should never be shared by any circumstance. What if? Unbeknownst to me, this extremely sensitive information was to be shared/stolen because of this virus that is on my computer. That would be a significant breach in security and an issue that I hope no educator ever has to go through.

Prevention • An explanation of how to prevent the ethical issue of viruses from affecting educators in the classroom, and keeping this scenario from ever happening, is by making sure that your classroom computer is protected against these malicious programs, at all times. You keep your computer protected by making sure that you have up-to-date antivirus software installed on your computer. There are many different antivirus software programs to choose from. The antivirus software that I highly recommend is one that I use on my personal computer called AVAST. It is free and does all that I require it to do. At the end of the day, it is entirely up to one to decide which antivirus software is best for them.
