Kentuckiana Digital Library…. • … establishes access to over 1 million digital images • … is the state’s repository for historic digital newspapers. • … allows one to search and listen to historic oral history interviews with legendary basketball coach Adolph Rupp. • … provides access to notable historic issues of the horse industry’s The Daily Racing Form. • … offers content regarding all 120 Kentucky counties.
Sabbatical Project: Winter/Spring 2010 Research and select an approach to establishing a Open Archival Information System (OAIS) digital repository to manage and preserve Kentuckiana Digital Library (KDL) digital assets into the future. Research and select a replacement, new front end access system for the KDL.
Basic Ability for Repository Put something into the repository one day and… get that same thing out of the repository on another day with assurance that it is, in fact, the same thing.
Simple Definition of Digital Preservation The long-term maintenance of a file sufficient to reproduce a facsimile of the original document and for the continued accessibility of the document through time and changing technology.
Digital Stuff is Temporary without the Enactment of Appropriate Curatorial Services Digital files poorly managed or left alone die slow or fast. Enact strategies and services that make the best and most intelligent effort to maintain validity of digital content over time. Digital Curation is the process of establishing and developing long-term repositories of digital assets for current and future reference by researchers, scientists, and historians, and scholars generally.
Two Approaches to Digital Curation and Building Repositories • Digital Object Store (FEDORA/D-SPACE) • Monolithic single solution systems • All-or-nothing • Database-driven • Micro-Services • Modular • Functionally orthogonal • Build-as-you-go • File System-driven
Micro-Services Basing services around a basic, well-understood file system. Each service is small and self-contained collectively easier to develop, deploy, maintain, and enhance. They are more easily replaced when they have outlived their usefulness.
Deciding Factors For Micro-Services • Less • Susceptible to obsolescence • Complexity (no complicated databases) • Rigidity with modular approach • Technical investment (easier to develop/replace) • Allows for • Direct, unmediated access option • Scalability • Outlast lifespan of enterprise information systems
