Write down the following definitions: Evaporation: water changes from a liquid state to a gaseous state Transpiration: water exits the leaves of a plant and evaporates into the air Condensation: water rises and cools into tiny droplets that form clouds Precipitation: water return’s from the air to Earth’s surface (rain, snow, sleet, hail) Runoff: water runs along the surface through a river or a stream Seepage: water sinks through the surface deep into the groundwater RootUptake: roots of plants soak up water and transport it through rest of plant
Imagine that you are a single water molecule In this activity, you will travel through the water cycle. With each dice roll, you will end up at a different stop. There are an infinite number of possible paths that you can take among the various stops of the water cycle.
Imagine that you are a single water molecule Between the stops, roll the dice. Click on the dice that corresponds to your roll. On your worksheet, write down your new location. Then, determine how you got there using 1 of the 7 terms for the Water Cycle.
Let’s say that you began as a water molecule in the CLOUDS. Write “CLOUDS” for Location 1 (already done for you) From your dice roll, you find out that your next step is on a SNOWY MOUNTAIN. Write “SNOWY MOUNTAIN” for Location 2 (a.d.f.y)
Then, determine which process of the water cycle (the terms above) let you travel from location to location. For example, to go from the CLOUDS to the SNOWY MOUNTAIN, the water molecule would first have to CONDENSE into clouds and then PRECIPITATE as snow on to the mountain. Write “Condensation + Precipitation” next to the arrow between Locations 1 and 2(a.d.f.y)
So now you begin in Location 2: The Snowy Mountains. Roll your dice and click to find out where you will go next.
Write MOUNTAINS for your new location. Determine which Water Cycle process led you here. Roll the dice and click your next location.
