US Involvement in the Philippines • Spain controlled the Philippines since the 16th Century • American ships destroyed Spanish fleet in Manila Bay • US forces and Filipino rebels forced Spanish surrender • The Treaty of Paris was signed where Spain ceded the Philippines to the US for 20 million dollars
Motives Justifications v. • Wanted to gain control of Philippines to • Expand their empire • Wanted more accessible trading (Asia) • Show their military muscle to the world • Have more American friendly ports open to refuel • To save the Filipinos from the oppressive rule of the Spaniards • To establish the freedom of the Filipinos • Educate and enlighten the Filipinos
The reaction of the Filipinos • The Filipinos felt that they deserved their independence • Congress would not pass a law giving the Philippines their independence • Tension mounted between American troops and the Filipino population • “Approximately twenty thousand armed and disciplined American troops [were stationed] in the city of Manila and vicinity, controlling a [Filipino] population” –Felipe Agoncillo
Final Result • The tension peaked on February 4th, 1899 • Open insurrection erupted, led Emilio Aguinaldo • The American people were skeptical of the Philippine-American War • Filipinos only asked for freedom, the American dream
Superman or Mafia Don • The U.S. was the Philippines mafia don • The Filipinos believed America would bring them freedom • Instead, America waged war with the Philippines, and the Filipinos lost approximately a million casualties • “The Filipinos had much to lose and nothing whatever to gain by a conflict with American forces”
Affects to Region • The Philippines were negatively affected by the US presence • Although the US brought school, and education, the limited Filipino freedom • Filipinos lost hundreds of thousands in the Philippine- American War
