  3. 11th GRADE TASKS • Research colleges and develop preliminary list. • Visit colleges. • Take standardized tests. • Attend college fairs at local schools as posted • Speak with teachers about letters of recommendation. • Draft essays and resume. • Complete feedback forms for your counselor. • CHECK YOUR EMAIL DAILY!

  6. COLLEGE BOARD WEBSITE • https://bigfuture.collegeboard.org/college-search • You can use a variety of filters to help you find schools that will meet your needs • Use the account for SAT/PSAT/AP registration!

  7. STRUCTURING YOUR LIST • Probable: Your GPA and test scores are above the average admitted student; likely acceptance. • Target: Your GPA and test scores are a close match to the average admitted student; 50/50 chance. • Reach: Your GPA and test scores are below the average admitted student.

VISITING COLLEGES • Excused days, must bring in note on COLLEGE LETTERHEAD • Think about school days off, and summer as times to visit • Start researching open house dates. • Register for on-campus events through admission website. • Go when the college is in session—realistic sense of the school • Ask about FLY-IN PROGRAMS

  10. COLLEGE FAIRS • Kean University County Fair • NACAC College Fair….held at the Meadowlands in Secaucus. • ESSEX County College • Do your research in advance! • Keep an open mind!

  11. IMPORTANT FORMS • Counselor Recommendation Form • Teacher Recommendation Form • Transcript Release Form AVAILABLE ON THE GUIDANCE WEBSITE

TEACHER RECOMMENDATION LETTERS • Complete the TEACHER RECOMMENDATION REQUEST FORM for each teacher you ask • ASK the teacher at least two weeks in advance of deadline (teachers can say NO) • Plan to request TWO teacher letters of recommendation • Consider teachers with whom you’ve developed a good relationship. • Write a THANK YOU note

  13. STANDARDIZED TESTING Registration for SAT and ACT must be done on the respective websites: www.collegeboard.org – SAT www.act.org – ACT SAT ACT IF YOU RECEIVE FREE OR REDUCED LUNCH, SEE YOUR COUNSELOR FOR A FEE WAIVER!

  14. COLLEGE ESSAY • Answer the question/prompt that is presented. • Edit and re-edit. Multiple drafts are normal. • Share with a peer, teacher, parent(s), counselor. • Draft these now – save yourself the panic in 12th grade! Essay writing takes time and you want to present your best work. • You will spend 1st Marking Period working on the essay with your 12th grade English teacher

BUILD YOUR RESUME • Activities • Community Service • Employment • Awards • Hobbies • Talents • Unique experiences • Summer experiences • Home responsibilities (caring for animals, siblings, family members, helping with family business, etc.) • Don’t undervalue anything you do. This is your place to shine!

SPECIAL TALENTS & UNIQUE EXPERIENCES • Athletes: Register with NCAA Eligibility Center ASAP; work with your coach. • Artists: Check portfolio requirements, talk with your art teachers. • Performers: Check audition requirements, work with your teachers/directors. • Everyone: Work with your counselor to discover, develop, and enhance your talents and experiences!

Paying for College • Merit Based Aid (ability) • Scholarships---DO NOT HAVE TO PAY BACK! • Need Based Aid (family finances) • Grants---DO NOT HAVE TO PAY BACK!!! • Loans---YOU MUST PAY BACK!!! • Student Employment • Based on FAFSA! • Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA) • Opens October 1, 2018 • ATTEND FINANCIAL AID NIGHT at HHS!

  18. PRESENTING YOURSELF • Clean up Facebook, Instagram, Snapchat, Twitter, and all social media pages! Check your privacy settings. • Be professional in emails and all other correspondence. • Email address, screen name, password. • Google Search yourself! (Web and image search.) • Keep your communication formal; no text slang. • Dress appropriately for tours, and especially for interviews!
