Is HD content available for IFE? Can the IFE Systems support HD? Will the passengers demand HD? Should there be a charge for HD? A trade-off for number of SD movies vs HD movies must be made What are some of the considerations for HD Video viewing for IFE - HD Video for IFE
HD TV has is here! And most households will have HD sets and programming. Terrestrial TV (ATSC) and most cable companies do not charge for HD programming Many viewers can not see the difference between HD and SD - Why? HD Video for IFE
Three commonly used TV 16x9 aspect ratio standards for HD - 720P, 1080I and 1080P There are several commonly used resolutions by HD TV sets and players - FHD 1920x1080 2,073,600 pixels HD 1366x768 1,049,088 pixels DVD 720x480 345,600 pixels HD Video for IFE
HD Standard Formats 1080P - 1920x1080 pixels (Blue Ray) 1080I -1920x1080 pixels (Cable/ ATSC) 720P -1280x720 pixels (ABC Ch7 LA) DVD 480P - 640x480 / 800x480 720x480 (data) 1080P -1920x1080 Up converted DVD LCD Display Resolutions - 1920x1080 (23”-42”) 1366x768 (13”-37”) 1280x800 (12”-15”) 1024x600 (9”-12”) 800x480 (7”-9”)
The visual acuity of the human eye is 1 minute of arc or .1” at 30’, .07”at 20’ or .0055” at 20” A rule of thumb for optimum HD viewing distance is 2 to 3 times the display width Most people view a HD TV from more than 3 times the display width distance - For a 46” HD TV, 6.6’ to 10’ is optimum Optimum HD Viewing
Economy Seat Consider a 10” LCD Display with 1024x600 pixels on an economy seat with a 30” seat pitch. With an 18” viewing distance the display would be equivalent in size to a 46” TV for a 2 display widths viewing distance. A 720P or a 480P format would yield a good HD viewing experience. The 720P would be better but would be limited by the 600 pixel display.
Premium Seat and Group Display For premium seat and group viewing displays the 720P format would be sufficient. The viewing distance is a major consideration for selecting the HD display resolution and size. For group viewing display each viewer will have a different viewing distance but with HD the viewers closest to the screen will have the best experience.
