Where I’m From Poem FACING HISTORY & OURSELVES FACING HISTORY & OURSELVES ART INTRO. WEEK I
Step I: Answer questions in your Journal Describe where you live. ( This can be literal or representational…what does it look like…what do you like about it?) What objects can be found in your home or room? (at least 2) What are the names of people in your family? List one or two family traditions, things your family does together. What phrases, words, or saying are important to you or to members of your family? What are some foods you or your family eat often? What is your favorite holiday? What is something you hear said a lot at home? FACING HISTORY & OURSELVES Step II: Incorporate your answers into a “Where I’m From” poem. Simply add “I’m From” or “From” to the beginning of each line, in the same style as sample shown. FACING HISTORY & OURSELVES ART INTRO. WEEK I
“I’m From the Woods....” by Nick I’m from the woods and the creek behind my fenceFrom the gray wooden backyard deck.I’m from the honeysuckles,The pear trees by the neighbor’s gardenFrom the creek when I swing over it. I’m from the yellow walls of Grandma’s kitchenFrom the Yorkshire pup, the coolest thing in my family.I’m from macaroni pictures of the ArkFrom “I just can’t snap my fingers and make it happen” and from David the Gnome in summers long ago. I’m from my mom’s side of the family,From roasting turkeys for each holiday,From when Papaw yelled at his boss and got firedFrom the family pictures in the big wooden cabinet andFrom the family gathering when we drag them out. I am from those moments.A root that no one sees, but walks all overAn important part of the tree.” FACING HISTORY & OURSELVES FACING HISTORY & OURSELVES ART INTRO. WEEK I
Where I’m From By Ebony Nicole Johnson I’m from a place when the snow-capped mountains are covered in white, and the Shenandoah Valley sings with the wind, I know I am home. Where I’m from, winter there is never more beautiful than during the holiday season of carolers and spiced apple rum Where I’m from, down in the basement by the fire is a small table that shows my rainbow…”Family” Where I’m from, when I visit, my Chihuahua Isabella knows to run down the steps and make a sharp left to my retreat adorned with art, 9 foot walls of glass window, and an old quilt covered in the scents of young age Where I’m from, on the walls you see Andy, Luke, Jesse, Damien, and Earl, Jimmy, Cornelia, Charlie, and Ebony filling every space of our blended family of black and white, trophies and pee ball awards I’m from the traditions of spiced rum balls, smoked salmon, port wine cheddar until 2am and having Monopoly Christmas tournaments with an occasional dance with my mother I’m from obviously a family who carols at Christmas and does every idiotic or cliché tradition known to man during this holiday I’m from a place where I know that euphoric North Pole is always in session.
