Why Library Automation automation of libraries are the following explosion of knowledge resulting in numerous specializations And flow of almost non-stop information; inability of users to explore unlimited literature Wastage of enormous precious time in handling routine and repetitive library operations Even the largest of the libraries cannot acquire and make available the entire published materials

Steps First the researcher studied about the library collections and arrangement of books. started giving the accession numbers as a fresh and made all the necessary entries in books entered the books details in Accession register for the current and future use. researcher planned to go for the automation by using Open Source Software researcher selected KOHA Integrated Library System based on its performance and features Accession details were entered in excel for the easy conversion of bibliographical datas. Installed koha open source software

OBJECTIVES • To implement KOHA at Academic Staff College the following are the objectives aimed • To develop and update database of books and other resources of Academic staff college library at Bharathidasan University. • To implement automated Library system using KOHA Open Source Software. • To carryout housekeeping functions very effective. • To provide various search options like author, title, keyword, publisher, publication and year etc • To know the availability of books and other status of the resources. • To connect the library OPAC in web environment for the wider reach. • To have entire control over the library operations.

STATEMENT OF THE PROBLEM Academic Staff College of Bharathidasan University is functioning towards improving the Status of Teachers and proposed to provide opportunities for Professional and Career Development, so that teachers can fulfill their role and responsibilities within the System of Higher Education. Hence this is the place where the faculty members can enhance their teaching and academic abilities within short period of time. To support for this activities the library place the vital role hence this project “implementation of Library Automation using KOHA at Academic Staff College Library, Bharathidasan University” was carriedout

  10. WHAT IS KOHA Koha was created in 1999 by Katipo Communications for the Horowhenua Library Trust in New Zealand, and the first installation went live in January 2000. Kohais a full-featured, open source ILS (Integrated Library System). Koha is the world's first free Open Source Integrated Library System licensed under GNU public license. It was developed in New Zealand by the Horowhenua Library Trust and Katipo Communications Ltd Koha was developed in 1999 and the first library went live in January of 2000. (www.koha.org) Koha system is a Full Catalogue, OPAC, Circulation, Member Management and Acquisition package for library automation.

LIBRARY AUTOMATION USING KOHA • Online Public Access Catalogue of the Library holdings • Database of Library users • Circulation i.e. issues & returns of Library items • Reservation Facility for Library items • Management of serials i.e. subscription, renewals etc • Budgets management • Transfers between Library Branches • Other most of the related functions of the Library • It uses dual database design that utilizes the strengths of the two major industry • Standard database types (Text & RDBMS). This ensures that it is scalable enough to meet the transaction load of any Library. • Koha supports MARC21 and UNIMARC bibliographic records. It also uses Z39.50 protocol

  29. CONCLUSION AND RECOMMENDATIONS Koha is an integrated Library software system which is having all the required models for all types of libraries (i.e.) small Libraries to very large libraries. It is found that automation of Academic Staff College Library will be very much helpful for the Management to have their entire Library process on control. Koha is an Open Source Integrated Library Software. Installation of Koha in LINUX Platform has being considred as the latest Technological Development, which satisfies the Academic Staff College Library officials.
