Tip of the day: *New this semester: Tips of the Day • These are just tidbits of knowledge to help strengthen your English skills. I’m basing my tips of the day off of common mistakes I see in your papers. • Not “standards” grades, but hopefully they will help you to be better. • Tip #1: A lot, not alot. Alot is not a word.
Announcements/Reminders: • Next journals due: Wednesday, Feb. 5th • CHANGE: ONLY TWO OUTSIDE BOOKS THIS SEMESTER. You’re almost seniors! To continue working toward the future… Expectations for the semester: • What do you think we should work on as a class? What should be some expectations? Talk to a friend for the next minute. Here are some things that I was thinking… • ALL homework turned in • Only speaking when hands are raised. • Expectations this semester will be higher. • Academics: assignments will continue to have more expectations • Behavior: Less outside talking/behavioral issues will be tolerated. • Be the best you can be! A couple of notes on the final exam: • Writing section: Most of you did well on this section! Good work! • Remember that a theme should be a message– saying that something could turn out “good or bad” isn’t a message– it’s not arguable. • SAME EXPECTATIONS as a normal essay • Hook, bridge, don’t use “you,” good TRANSITIONS between paragraphs • What formatting should you use when you use a novel’s title? • Italicize or underline. Jesse.Of Mice and Men. DO THIS ALL THE TIME. • Clarification: George killed Lennie to HELP him– Lennie’s fate would’ve been much worse if Curley got to him. They couldn’t run away because Lennie might hurt someone again. • Grade changes: If you attached your grades, any grades that I circled on your grade sheet were changed/improved. • After considering your grade, would you have studied more? What would you have changed about the way you studied? Write your thoughts at the top of your final.
Look at your final exam writing section. • On a separate sheet of paper, write the first sentence of your first paragraph (should be a hook) • Then write your thesis • Write the first sentence (topic sentence) of your second body paragraph • Write the first sentence (topic sentence) of your third body paragraph. • Write the first sentence (topic sentence) of your fourth body paragraph. • Write the first sentence (topic sentence) of your conclusion paragraph.
Look at your sentences… • When you look at all of these sentences combined, does it sound like a good, solid paragraph that flows? • OR does it look like this? • The theme that everyone needs a companion shows up in Of Mice and Men. • The theme that everyone needs a companion also is present in The Crucible. • In Jesse, everyone needs a companion. • Take a few minutes to try and revise your paragraph so that it has stronger transitions. Here are some starting phrases if you’re stuck: • Just like in [text], the theme… • Though this theme is strong in [text], it is even more evident…
WRITE…. Take 4 minutes to simply write your thoughts… • What are Americans’ attitudes toward wealth and poverty? • What is your attitude toward wealth and poverty? • If you run out of ideas for what to write about, here are some other questions to consider: • What defines a person’s social class? • Can money really buy happiness? • Would you marry for money? • Is there any difference between people who have inherited wealth and people who have worked hard for their money?

Homework: On 1 sheet of paper, please write a quote that does one of two things: • Shows a new goal you have for the semester • Expresses a new side of you that you have discovered over the last semester. Needs to be: • Colored/decorated • Written by someone else (not you, not your friends) • Due tomorrow.
Exit: • Hand me your final exam AND… • Write your dream and three concrete steps you can take to get there THIS SEMESTER • Example: • Dream: I would like to buy a house. • Step 1: Save $300 from each paycheck. • Step 2: Only go out to dinner once every two weeks to save money. • Step 3: Research houses in the area.
