  2. What is a hyphen? A punctuation mark used to join words or to separate syllables of a single word.

  3. EXAMPLES OF HYPHENATED WORDS Merry-go-round Eighty-three brother-in-law Mass-produced mid-October Four-fifths T-shirt Self-confident Seventeen-year-old Full-time Anti-abortion Ex-boyfriend

  4. Rule #1 • Use a hyphen to join two words serving as a single adjective that describe a noun • For example: Drake is a well-known rapper. • BUT, “well known” is not hyphenated when it comes AFTER a noun. • For example: Drake’s songs are well known.

  5. Rule #2 • Use hyphens when you’re dealing with numbers or prefixes. One-eighth pre-Civil war Ex-husband All-inclusive Self-sufficient Seven-tenths Thirty-three mid-1700s

  6. Rule #3 • Use hyphens for line breaks.
