Dash • A punctuation mark with various functions. • Often mistaken for a hyphen or minus sign.
Different Types of Dashes • Figure Dash(-) • En Dash(–) • Em Dash(—)
Figure Dash • Named because of it’s size, most fonts it is the size as a digit. • Usage: phone numbers (618-555-1234)
En Dash • Usage: to contrast values, illustrate relationship between two things RANGE OF VALUES : Closed range of values (June–August ) (R.I.P. 1935–91) RELATIONSHIPS/CONNECTION : (e.g. the Miami–Boston game; Miami beat Boston 120–107) ATTRIBUTIVE COMPOUNDS: compound (phrasal)(e.g. Post-Vietnam War; ex-girlfriend, The Nobel Piece Prize–winning author)
Em Dash • Usage: break of thought / may replace colons, semicolons, commas, and parenthesis Example: He said he hates the Miami Heat—including Lebron and Wade—and thinks they don’t deserve a championship. I put in the hard work—my boss gets all the credit.(usually would use a semicolon) This year I need these players to do good—Carmelo Anthony, Kobe Bryant, and Rajon Rondo.(normally a colon would be used here) When in doubt, the Knicks always have there star player—Carmelo Anthony—to put points on the board.(parenthesis or commas would usually go here)
Hyphens • A punctuation mark used to join words, to separate syllables of a single word, and help spelling of a word, for prefixes and suffixes, some compound words. • Often confused with dashes and minus signs
Examples • Joining words: Oh no you didn’t, you snot-nosed little… • Syllables: Na-than Lu-yan-do, syl-la-bles • Spelling words: N-A-T-H-A-N, W-O-R-D • Prefix and suffix(not mandatory unless prefix is followed by proper adjective) Co-worker (w/o hyphen beginning of word can seem like cow) un-American (mandatory)
