New Grading Scale • BOE approved a policy change enacting a 1-4 grading scale, instead of the previous 1-3 grading scale. • Kindergarten students: • Barrow County Schools will use the state-mandated Kindergarten assessment (GKIDS) to report student progress in the areas of English Language Arts, Math, Social Studies, Science, Approaches to Learning, Personal and Social Development, and Motor Skills. A BCSS Kindergarten Skills Checklist will also be used. • Grades 1-5: • Academic progress; conduct and work habits affecting achievement are to be marked as: • 4 - Exceeds (Achievement exceeds proficiency of the standard) • 3 - Proficient (Consistent and independent achievement of the standard) • 2 - Progressing (Ongoing progress toward achievement of the standard) • 1 - Does Not Meet (Limited or minimum progress toward achievement of the standard) • NA - Not introduced or not assessed at this time. • Grades 4 and 5: • The minimum passing score shall be 70 for all subjects/courses taught in grades 4 and 5. No letter grade will be assigned.
Merit and Honor Roll • Merit and Honor Roll • While we know that our state has moved to the CCGPS which is a new and more rigorous state curriculum, it is not our intent to place top honors out of the reach of our most capable students. Adjustments have been made in the honor roll guidelines that will reflect the rigor without setting the bar so high that it is unattainable by our top students. • 3rd grade: • Honor Roll = All 4’s and 3’s • Merit Roll = More 4’s and 3’s than 2’s (no 1’s) • 4th-5th grade: • Honor Roll = at least 90 for all numeric grades and all 4’s and 3’s • Merit Roll = at least 80 for all numeric grades and more 4’s and 3’s than 2’s (no 1’s) • NOTES: • 1. “Factors Affecting Achievement”, Art, Music, and PE will not count toward Honor or Merit Rolls. • 2. Not all elementary schools recognize K-2nd graders. That decision is made by the Leadership Teams at the individual schools.
