Maurice Utrillo was born in 1883 in Paris • He started painting in 1905 • He used impressionist technique, but somber colors (ochre, green, grey) • 1909-14 were his most productive years • They are called “the white period” because of the main color he used • 1915-1924 are called the “colored years” • Utrillo suffered from poor physical and mental health, avoided fighting in WWI • Despite his health, he gained several commissions for good money • His style changed: colors became intense, black geometric lines marked the spaces • 1925-1955 Utrillo became rich and famous • He married Lucie Valore in 1935 • He abandoned the black contours. His paintings became more relaxed. • Utrillo died in on November 5, 1955 in Dax, France Utrillo’s life

  3. Utrillo’s Style He was encouraged to paint by his mother. With no other training, he drew and painted what he saw in Montmartre, Paris By 1920, he had become a legendary figure, whose paintings where known internationally In 1928, the French government awarded him the Cross of the Legion of Honor Now his early works may reach auction prices close to $1 million Utrillo mainly painted streets and buildings, with strong perspective
