Developing our Teams • Need to start strong teamwork now! • This is your current vision and it will probably change- we need to start somewhere • In your teams, develop a poster that incorporates: • your current understanding of RtII • your current vision of RtII in your building • your buildings current resiliency factors • Be prepared to report out
Pyramid of Interventions • As you are watching the video: • What concepts resonate with you? • What concepts are currently in place in your district? • What questions?
Pyramid of Response to Intervention • Using Chapters 1-3 Generate the following for each chapter (report out): • One sentence that you felt was most important • One phrase that summarizes an important thought • One word that is crucial to the understanding of the topic
How have things been going? • Looking for downtime in the day to provide Tier 2 & 3 support • Looking deeper into formative assessments • Differentiating instruction • Meeting as a building to discuss RtII concerns • Ideas for how to adapt our school for RtII • Grouping/looking for resources • High expectations • Increasing background knowledge • Ideas for intervention logs • Parent involvement • Reviewing Early Learning Standards
Things we have no control over… Money How much time we have …unless… PSSA
Additional Questions and Concerns • What are we getting rid of? • Scheduling • RtII in Content Areas • When to move within the tiers? • Some children seem to have reading questions that I can’t figure out- are they always learning support? • LETRS • Time Frame: How long will implementation take?
Our Biggest Questions and Concerns • Time Management • Time to plan • Time to communicate • Time to instruct all tiers • Meeting Types • Individual Student Meetings • Class and Grade Level Data Meetings • Focus groups: instruction, book studies • Behavior meetings/SAP • Some meetings can blend
Our Biggest Questions and Concerns • Teacher Supports • New roles • Understanding instruction • Sharing student work • Intervention log • Communication and Parental Bias • First Steps: This question brings more questions…like….
How long, why and how? • Beginning of Implementation is 3-5 years • It starts now • I will be with you every step of the way • At your table discuss your thoughts on these 2 questions (be prepared to report out): • Why are we “doing” RtII? What is the purpose? • How will RtII support us in meeting required initiatives?
Effective Teaching Principles • Engagement Time • Success Rate • Content Coverage/Opportunities to Learn • Grouping for Instruction • Addressing Forms of Knowledge • Activating and Organizing Knowledge • Teaching Strategically • Making Instruction Explicit • Teaching Sameness in the Curriculum • Scaffolded Instruction
High Impact Strategies • Identify Similarities and Differences • Schema: how we learn • Summarizing and Note-Taking • Why to organize what we learn • Reinforcing Effort and Providing Recognition • Homework and Practice • Meaningful • Mastery • Purposeful
High Impact Strategies • Nonlinguistic Representations • Not written • Cooperative Learning • Setting Objectives and Providing Feedback • Generating and Testing Hypotheses • Ques, questions and advanced organizers • Developing questions prior to lesson, as well as “on the fly,” when formatively assessing
Getting Started • As a team, using the components of RtII, develop short term and long term outcomes. • Initial Screening Tool (to be completed for last meeting this year) • This will be discussed further at our last meeting • What can support the RtII initiative in my school? • What components will get broad agreement? • What is engaging? • What will produce observable changes?
RtI in Action • Boulevard Elementary School, Gloversville, New York • Think about the questions that you have regarding RtII implementation? • What questions were clarified while watching this videos? • How can we make RtII happen at our district, based on what we saw? • What additional questions came up?
Book Study • Pyramid Response to Intervention • Purpose • To develop professional learning communities • Assignment for next session: • Read Chapters 4 through 9, be prepared to discuss with someone outside of your district • I encourage you, if you are able, to develop a study group with your building teams, to discuss prior to our next meeting.
