Definition • Propaganda is information designed to affect public opinion about an issue. It is created to persuade the public to do or believe something. • Today cigarette companies pay big money for propaganda ads.
Techniques • Propaganda is used to appeal to a specific social groups, for example young men, women, mothers. • Propaganda usually does not give all of the important facts. It usually gives only one point of view. • We will look briefly at 10 techniques employed by propaganda campaigns.
Glittering Generalities • Use slogans that capture attention and stick in the memory.
Transfer • Transferring ideas and emotions from one idea to another.
Testimonial • Using a well known individual or organization to products.
Plain Folks • Using words or phrases that appeal to ordinary people.
Bandwagon • Suggesting that everyone is doing it and so should you.
Card Stacking • Strongly promoting favourable points while reducing or avoiding negative points.
Hidden Fears • Playing upon the individual's sense of insecurity.
Direct Order • Appealing to the desire in people to be told what to do.
Either Or Disease • There are only two possibilities, `right` and `wrong`.
Name Calling • Using put down words or phrases as labels for a person, group, or thing.

Assignment • Make your own Propaganda poster. We will provide the paper. Draw a picture and use some sort of caption. Include 2 of the 10 above mentioned techniques. (Specify techniques on the back).
