Neuron Function • It is the neurons job to pass or “transmit” messages from one cell to the next cell.
SYNAPSE • There is a space between each neuron called the synapse.
How does a nerve impulse start? • A stimulus creates the impulse. • The impulse travels into the neuron on the dendrite and it comes out on the axon. At the end of the axon, a neurotransmitter is released that carries the impulse across the synapse- to the next dendrite.
Sensory Neurons • Also called afferent neurons • Carry impulses from the skin and sense organs to the spinal cord and brain.
Motor Neurons • Also called efferent • Carry messages from the brain and spinal cord to muscles and glands.
Associative Neurons • Also called interneurons • They carry impulses from sensory neurons to motor neurons.
The Central Nervous System • Containsthe brain and the spinal cord.
What surrounds the spinal cord? • Spinal Fluid!!! • Spinal fluid • Spinal fluid • What is the function of CSF? Spinal fluid Spinal fluid Spinal fluid
Peripheral Nervous System • Made up of the cranial and spinal nerves. spinal cranial cranial spinal
Autonomic Nervous System Made up of two sub systems • Sympathetic system • Parasympathetic system
Sympathetic System • AKA = SNS • “Fight or Flight” • When the body perceives danger, the SNS sends a message to the adrenal medulla to secrete adrenaline- this increases your heartbeat.
Parasympathetic System • Counter acts the SNS. • Decreases the heart rate.
REFLEXES • Unconscious and involuntary • One example is the knee jerk response. • Involves a sensory nerve and a motor nerve.
Reflexes are used to protect the body automatically. They quickly move us away from things that may hurt us.
