Gods & Goddesses • Greeks believed in gods: • Zeus, Athena, and Poseidon • “controlled” earthly occurrences • acted very human: • emotions and actions
Hospitality to Guests • guests were godsends • given the best treatment possible • mistreating a guest = angering the gods
Homer • blind minstrel? • minstrel is a person who travels from place to place, reciting epic poems to the people • Exist? • Wrote The Odyssey and The Iliad
Uhh… what’s an “epic”? (paraphrase) • Poems characterized by great length, multiple settings, numerous characters, and a long time span. • Epics usually have a hero who is traveling on a long journey or overcoming an important obstacle. The hero’s story is usually spans over a long period of time and has supernatural forces (such as the gods).
