Continuing to influence the world Our achievements in the past year alone will lead to improvements in the health, environment and technology sectors. In 2009, for example we: • discovered how to produce liver cells specific to certain ethnic groups, potentially revolutionising drug treatments• invented a molecular device that could lead to the creation of futuristic, super-fast, quantum computers• invented new methods to improve the tracking of earthquakes• invented a high-speed computer chip that makes MP3 players and mobile phones smaller, faster and more environmentally friendly• developed techniques to create synthetic blood for use in transfusions
